Billy Florence - "Help Wanted" Signs Up For Several Industries

Technology and Baby Boomers might be the reason demand job categories like truck drivers and pharmacists are expected to exceed demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that certain jobs will experience a shortage of qualified workers. The job categories include: truck drivers and pharmacists as well as registered nurses.

Help Wanted Pharmacists: As baby boomers age, more prescriptions are required. Prescription demand has also increased to pharmaceutical companies advertising directly to consumers. Programming is frequently interrupted by ads directing viewers to ask their doctor for their product – by name. The number of prescriptions has increased from 2 billion to 3.2 billion in the last 10 years. Plus, that demand is expected to grow due to the new Medicare prescription drug program. The BLS reports the median salary for pharmacists is over $87,000.

Help Wanted Truck Drivers: Online shopping increases the need for long-haul shipping. If current demographic trends continue, the supply of new long-haul heavy truck drivers will not meet demand. A report prepared for the American Trucking Association (ATA) by Global Insight warns by 2014, the deficit is expected to reach 111,000 drivers. According to the BLS, the median salary for heavy or tractor-trailer truck drivers is $33,870.

Help Wanted Nurses: The nursing shortage has been a regular news headline. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human services, the shortage is expected to grow to nearly 30 percent by 2020. As boomer librarians reach retirement, the numbers entering the profession may not be able to keep up. Plus, the employment outlook will remain strong for qualified, skilled production employees (machinists) who operate equipment like lathes and drill presses.

If you interest is a business of your own, entrepreneurial interest and growth, especially in minority and woman owned business segments, is expected to remain strong through 2014.

Quixtar's Fred Harteis: Customer Service Business Tip

Thanks to Fred Harteis and Linda Harteis for sharing this valuable wisdom on the importance of customer service in business...

Fred Harteis, “Long term taking care of the customer is what keeps a company in business. In the hospitality business one way to stand out from the crowd is making the stay at your hotel something that can’t be easily copied. This successful case study provides an excellent business service example.”

Fred Harteis and Linda Harteis Business Case Study – Customer Service

A hotel wanted to offer its guests a special experience in every aspect of their stay. So each guest room is uniquely decorated by a different designer and a virtual tour of every room is online at the front desk so guests can pick the rooms they want. The final touch is small but telling. To update the ever-present mini-bar – and encourage guests to use theirs – the hotel staff stock it with the snacks that the guests themselves request when they check in. Every detail counts.

Florence & Victor: U.S. Dream Academy

Jody Victor and Billy Florence both support the U.S. Dream Academy and believe strongly in the difference that this organization makes...

See what Jody Victor and Billy Florence said about Quixtar and U.S. Dream Academy in the past...

The U.S. Dream Academy gives kids hope for the future. – Billy Florence

Victor of the Independent Business Owners Association International (IBOAI) announced the trade association’s enthusiastic support for Quixtar’s sponsorship of the U.S. Dream Academy.

“Our members, Independent Business Owners (IBOs) powered by Quixtar have supported the U.S. Dream Academy since its inception in 1998,” says Jody Victor.

“We’re thrilled to have Quixtar join us in championing this very worthy cause,” says Billy Florence, IBOAI president. “Jody Victor and I serve on the U.S. Dream Academy and the IBOAI boards as a public service and as a service to the IBO membership of our association. We believe in the US Dream Academy’s commitment to leveling the playing field for these special children and the IBOAI’s commitment to protecting our members’ business future,” adds Billy Florence.

Established by renowned gospel singer Rev. Wintley Phipps in 1998, the U.S. Dream Academy empowers at-risk youth by providing them with academic, social, and values enrichment through supportive mentoring programs.

“Through their mentoring programs,” says Jody Victor. “The U.S. Dream Academy provides thousands of children the resources and encouragement they need to succeed.”

“Quixtar IBOs have supported the U.S. Dream Academy financially and through donation of products and time,” states Billy Florence.

“Our members have a tradition of helping others achieve their dreams through a business of their own,” explains Jody Victor. “So, working with the U.S. Dream Academy is a natural extension of our desire to help people live better lives.”

The U.S. Dream Academy places a special emphasis on children with an incarcerated parent. “Studies have shown that these kids are six times more likely to end up in prison,” says Victor. The Academy works to break that cycle and provides programs for children falling behind in school.

Billy Florence - Save Big For Retirement

I recently read an article with some tips on how to save some big money for retirement.  There were just a few simple ideas.  The article sort of "put down" the method of giving up your daily Starbucks and saving that money for retirement.  While I do understand their point of view, I think it is wise to still consider what little choices can make over your lifetime.  $5 here and $5 there can make a big impact if saved instead.  But this article did offer a few tips which I agree can pay off big time in the long run...

You are probably going to have to give up something today for a shot at a better tomorrow. But by going about it the right way, you can often find tradeoffs that will allow you to sock away real money while still leading a rich, full life.

Drive less expensive cars during your lifetime: $180,000

Consider your car, for instance. While there's a certain pleasure in zipping around in a shiny StatusMobile, it's not worth sacrificing your retirement security for that thrill - especially when a lower sticker price doesn't have to mean giving up a lot in car comfort, looks or performance.

Say you're shopping for a moderately priced sedan. For $30,000 you can get a 2007 Acura TSX, a four-door number with a 205-horsepower engine, leather seats and a sunroof.

Or, if you're willing to sit on cloth, do without a sunroof and give up 39 hp, you could go with a 2007 Honda Accord LX, a comparable car that sells for $21,000.

Make that "compromise" several times over the course of a career and you could end up with an extra 180 grand when you retire.

I agree with this wisdom.  People can save so much money by being wise about the cars they can drive.  They can especially save a lot if they decide to always drive used cards versus new cars.

Jody Victor & Kathy Victor - Great Moments In America

Kathy Victor, “One of the most moving moments in America’s historic music came to us in 1861 from Julia Ward Howe. You’ve heard the words to her lyric poem. Ms. Howe was paid $5.00 for what was to become a piece of America’s music history. The impact was priceless.”

JODY VICTOR: MUSICAL MOMENTS

The year was 1861; Julia Ward Howe was watching the campfires of soldiers bivouacked around Washington DC, when the words that became the lyrical poem “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” began flowing into her mind. She submitted her work to the Atlantic Monthly magazine, and it was published early in 1862. It became an instant hit across the north.

Orrin Woodward - Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

Where have all the heroes gone? What a great question. Orrin Woodward wrote a great article that I think everyone should read. He talks about what made America a great country. Here is a little summary of the article...

"Where Have All the Heroes Gone?" was written by Orrin Woodward, founder of the Team. In the article, Orrin Woodward discusses the differences between a heroic vs. anti-heroic way of life. Orrin is concerned about the importance of our free enterprise system being taken for granted today. Without the entrepreneur who is the catalyst of growth, the free enterprise system will not work. Orrin does not expect the reader to agree with every point he makes, but he does ask that we seek the truth so that we may all grow in our understanding of what has made America such a blessed country.
