Amway Randy Haugen – Traveling Through Pages Of History

Randy Haugen points out the words "fitly chosen." Books can be your best friends and mentors. They can give us wisdom and help us to learn what it took another a lifetime. But the key is in choosing the "right" books...

Randy Haugen, “It is possible to spend the day with some of the greatest people in history; no particular timeline of introduction is required. Your local library is filled with biographies of men like Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, and Marie Curie. Be sure and note the words, “fitly chosen” in the Douglas Jerrold statement below.”

Haugen – Quick Quote Favorite About Books

A blessed companion is a book, - a book that, fitly chosen, is a lifelong friend . . . a book that, at a touch, pours its heart into our own. – Douglas Jerrold

Quixtar's Colombo DiSalvatore - Quality Reading

I agree with Colombo DiSalvatore.  We often talk about the importance of reading.  But WHAT we read is as important as HOW MUCH we read.  It is important that we develop the habit of reading quality books that cause us to think like Colombo DiSalvatore says here...

Colombo DiSalvatore, “There is a difference in quality of reading experiences. Popular novels of today would probably often be put in category as junk food for the brain, but literature that causes us to think and change for the better is the experience that Ralph Waldo Emerson describes.”

Colombo DiSalvatore – Wisdom of Reading Favorite

“A man who buys a book is not just buying a few ounces of paper, glue and printer’s ink; he may be buying a whole new life.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Quixtar's Kathy Victor: Commitment to Goals

This is great information from Jody Victor & Kathy Victor on the importance of goal setting...

Kathy Victor, “ W. H. Murray lived the life of goal setting and accomplishing goals in the face of enormous obstacles. That’s why we’ve selected this leadership insight for you. Learning from the example of accomplishment is highly relevant.”

Jody Victor and Kathy Victor About Goals

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in ones favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings, and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: 'Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it! Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it.’”

-W.H. Murray, of the Scottish Himalayan Expedition

Amway's Randy Haugen: Winning Is A Process Not A Game Score

I love this story. This is a great example of true sportsmanship by Emmit Smith...

Randy Haugen, “Emmit Smith recently won a national dancing competition. The discipline he applied to that opportunity was learned during his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. His win reminded me of a story I’d heard about Emmitt and Thurman Thomas.”

Randy Haugen Leadership Favorite: Leaders Encourage

In 1994, Thurman Thomas, head bowed with his hands covering his face, sat on the Buffalo Bills bench following his team’s fourth straight Super Bowl loss. His three fumbles had helped seal their awful fate.

Suddenly, standing before him was the Dallas Cowboys’ star running back Emmitt Smith. Just named MVP for Super Bowl XXVIII, Smith was carrying his small goddaughter. Smith looked down at her and said, “I want you to meet the greatest running back in the NFL, Mr. Thurman Thomas.”

Team Legacy's Randy Haugen – Business History Fact

I didn't know why they called them ticker tape parades for the longest time.  I like learning how things get their name.  Although ticker tape isn't used any longer, the name stuck...

This fascinating business term has its roots nearly a century ago. – Randy Haugen

Randy Haugen Business History

The famous of the nation are still honored in New York by ticker tape parades. The time of real ticker tape is long gone. Wall Street operates electronically.

The first Ticker tape parade was first used in a parade to welcome the Prince of Wales to New York City in 1919. In those days Rolls of paper were used to record stock trades. As the paper rolled over pins that punched stock information read by stock brokers, it would leave holes. When a parade was organized, the shredded paper strips tape was scooped up and thrown out of windows on the parade passing below their windows.

As ticker tape became obsolete as new investing tools became available, it was replaced by a new product - confetti.

TEAM Randy Haugen: Book Thoughts From Humor Is Tremendous

Books are so powerful for our thinking.  Just like Randy Haugen says here, you don't find great thoughts from TV shows.  Your best thinking comes when you read a great book.  While this book may have a light title, it is a very powerful read...

Randy Haugen, “Smile! It increases your face value.” This is perfect word picture and an excellent thought nugget for reflective thinking.”

The first time, I encountered these deceptively simple words wasn’t during a movie or on television. It was in a book by Charlie “T” Jones. It’s a play on the words for the traditional investment definition of “face value.” Definition: The value of a security (bond) as printed on the front - or face - of the certificate. So, the comparison is that a smile makes our face more valuable to others. Perfect.

In his book, Humor is Tremendous, Charlie even provides book quips and quotes. Here are two of my favorites.

His books are selling like wildfire. Everybody’s burning them. – George DeWitt

A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read. – Mark Twain.
