According to Census Bureau, online retail sales in 2005 grew 24.6% over 2004. In the same time period, total retail sales in 2005 grew at 7.2 percent over the 2004 result. Online sales growth outpaced the retail industry three to one. Although historic in terms of growth, online sales accounted for 2.3 percent of all retail sales in 2005, according to the Commerce Department. The Commerce Department numbers includes industries that are unlikely to occur online, such as fuel and restaurant sales, but exclude auto parts. If we adjust for those two items to see a more accurate comparison, the proportion of online sales to offline sales that could occur online jumps from 2.3 percent of all retail sales to 3.4 percent. Direct Selling Industry: Direct Selling reports that 10 percent of its industry sales now happen on the internet. This is five times the growth of total retail industry.
